There are several types of introductory remarks. First, you have locators. This will narrow down the question and answer to a specific section, chapter or book. Second, you have “question” modifiers. These tell you what kind of question is going to be asked. Third, you have “answer” modifiers. These tell you how you have to give your answer.
Question modifiers
Two-Part Question, Three-Part Question, Etc.
This introductory remark tells you that the question has two parts. Unless used in conjunction with a multiple part answer, there must be exactly as many answers as there are questions.
Two-part question. From the section titled “Life in the Spirit”
We no longer follow what but instead follow who?
R 8:4 He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.
Most of the time, multiple parts of the question are related:
Who demand miraculous signs and who look for wisdom? vs. Jews demand what and who look for wisdom?
Quotation Question
These questions require the quizzer to give the verse perfectly. That means you cannot add, subtract, modify or change any word. You cannot say “Um” in the middle. You can’t stutter in the middle of a word and start it over again. Contender/XP5 will only ask quizzers to quote verses with a black dot next to them. Champion can ask for any verse to be quoted. Typical ways to ask these:
Quotation question. From Romans chapter 8.
Quote the 9th verse.
R 8:9 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)
Quotation question.
Quote the only verse in Romans chapter 8 that mentions the word, “Abba”
R 8:15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
Quotation question. From consecutive verses of Romans chapter 8.
Quote verses 1 and 2.
R 8:1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
R 8:2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death
Additional things to know:
- Sometimes, the writer will put the chapter to quote from in the question instead of the introductory remarks (example – Quote the 9th verse from the eighth chapter).
- For multiple verse quotations, as long as the question doesn’t require verses to be quoted in order, you can give them in any order
- If the chapter is given in the question instead of in the introductory remarks, it no longer needs to be a multiple part question as long as the verses demanded are consecutive.
Quotation Completion Question
The question will start with something and the quizzer will be required to finish it word for word.
Question number 1 for 30 points. Quotation completion question. From two consecutive verses. From the section titled “Life in the Spirit”
Quote this verse, and the one which follows, quote, “So now there ……
R 8:1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.
R 8:2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death.
The rules state that you must start at the beginning of a verse in this case and also the one that follows. They must be given in order. Also, the first word of the scripture to complete must be sufficient to differentiate the answer based on the material the question is asked from. In this case, no other verse in that section title begins with “So,” so the question is valid. If a quizzer buzzes in during the reading of the verse (even the first sound of the first word of the verse), the question is no longer considered interrupted. Also, for their answer, the quizzer may choose to restate the words the quizmaster read or they may begin where the quizmaster left off.
Besides asking for verses, writers can ask you to finish a sentence, an Old Testament Scripture, etc.
Quotation completion question. From Romans chapter 8.
Finish this question, quote, “If God is for us…..
R 8:31 If God is for us, who can ever be against us?
Essence Question
The only difference between these questions and quotation questions is that you are no longer required to give the verse perfectly. This means you must only give, in essence, the phrases, clauses and keywords. It is up to the quizmaster and judges to determine if your answer is “in essence”. Leaving out a phrase is not a good idea. Replacing it with your own words is usually fine. In questions, the word “Quote” is usually replaced with “Give, in essence,”.
Essence question. From Romans chapter 8.
Give, in essence, the only verse that mentions the word “hostile”
R 8:7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.
Essence Completion Question
As with Essence Questions, the only difference between these and quotation completion questions is that you can now give the answer in essence. The question looks exactly the same as a quotation completion completion.
Essence completion question. From the section titled “Life in the Spirit”
Finish in essence this verse, quote, “He did this so that…”
R 8:4 He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.
Statement and Question
A statement and question is exactly what the name implies.
Statement and question. Give a complete answer. From the section titled “Life in the Spirit”
We have been adopted as God’s children. As a result what do we call God?
R 8:15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
Scripture Text Question
These questions involve a preamble, then the word “quote”, then a direct quotation from the Scripture.
Scripture text question. Give a complete answer. From the section titled “Nothing Can Separate Us from God’s Love”
What is done for quote “your sake”?
R 8:36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”)
Scripture text question. Give two complete answers. From the section titled “Life in the Spirit”
Why can a sinful nature quote, “never please God.”?
R 8:7 For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.
Additional Notes:
- If you interrupt before “quote”, you do not need to say “quote” when you finish the question.
- The Scripture text must come from the same verse, the previous verse or the following verse from which the answer comes.
Application Questions
The questions and answers are given in advance and the idea is to teach doctrinal knowledge. They are treated identical to JBQ questions and sometimes even are JBQ questions!

R 8:13 For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live.
Additional Notes:
- You do not necessarily have to give the full verse to be correct.
- These are not quotation questions, so you must only give the answer in essence.
- Typically a writer will underline what they consider to be part of the answer on the question sheet given to the officials. But the officials ultimately are allowed to decide what the answer is.
- Most of the time it’s best to quote the verse, but you have to be sure that by quoting the verse you aren’t providing incorrect information.

Paul was convinced of what?
R 8:38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

R 8:22 For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.
Chapter Analysis
Chapter Analysis can be found in the back of your scripture portion. Chapter analysis should be highlighted by quizzers to help them see and memorize it. It includes: Individuals, Geographical locations, questions, old testaments scriptures, parenthetical statements and exclamations. When listing individuals and geographical locations as the answer, quizzers are allowed to use connecting words such as “and,” “plus,” “with”… When the answer requires a question, old testament scripture, exclamation or parenthetical statement, it does not need to be word perfect. It just needs to contain the key phrases, clauses or key words to be correct.
Chapter analysis answer. From the section titled “Life in the Spirit”
What law is mentioned?
R 8:3 Moses
*Note: A quizzer that answers: “the law of Moses” would be incorrect => “the law of” is not chapter analysis
