Post-Nationals Fun Awards

Most of you haven't been around long enough to remember some of the "fun" awards they used to give out at the banquet. One of them was for funniest contest and another was for funniest moment on a quiz trip. In part, that's why I asked for that information on your team bios.

In the next week, I'm going to be putting up a survey on the website where you can vote for your favorites in these and other categories.

If anyone has a last-minute submissions (given the bios were written before nationals), please e-mail to biblequiz@me.com. I will compile all of the entries I got from the team bios. Also, I will be adding some things from the final east-west match, so you don't need to submit anything from that. (The distributive property rebuttal and the "We don't know these were men...I know Greek" contest will definitely go in there).

Also, since they've been removed from the current Hall of Records (a situation I'm working to rectify), here are some of the previous winners. The fact that Greg House presented most of these should not surprise any of you.

1989 Greg House Calvary Christian Center, Buena Park, CA "Joe Cincinnati" (Presented)
1990 Greg House Calvary Christian Center, Buena Park, CA "My quizzer speaks a foreign language" (Presented)
1991 Greg House Calvary Christian Center, Buena Park, CA "Heaven is NOT a place" (Presented)
1992
1993 Greg House Life Center A/G, Lakewood, CA "Mary was not the mother of Jesus" (Heard)
1994
1995 Greg House Life Center A/G, Lakewood, CA "SPAM Contest" (Heard)
1996 "The answer was too easy for a 30"
1997 Ted Barrans Calvary Temple, Auburn, WA "Rubber Ducky"
1998 Richard Connor Cedar Park A/G, Bothell, WA "Sit down and shut up!"

I know the story behind almost all of these if you want to hear.

My favorite "funny story" was the quizzer from King's Chapel who went to McDonalds and asked "Point of order, how much are your Chicken McNuggets?"

Foulable Offense?

I heard about one room at nationals that was apparently fouling quizzers left and right for marking their fingers to remember the introductory remarks.

Does anyone here think this should be a foul?

10 point questions

I want opinions from current and past quizzers about the writing of 10 pointers and how soon and consistently the key word should come.

It seems there are alternate opinions out there:
When a writer will write most all of the ten pointers to have a key word in the first two words, some people tend to like it, and others tend to think it is ridiculous because every ten pointer is hit on the first word hoping to get the second word also. So where is the balance in your opinion?

One thing that seems consistent, in the absence of scripture text, people do not like the key word to go beyond the fourth word.

I remember when Greg House wrote questions, if the word 'who' or a specific name was the first word of a ten pointer, then most of the time the second word would be the key word. So, if a quizzer heard 'Paul' he would go right there, knowing he would get the second word also, like "Paul prayed/...for whom" and it was obvious. But if you heard 'When', it could be something like, "When did Paul return/...to Corinth". So you needed to wait until fourth word.

Here is my thought: would a thoroughly consistent system be better than one that was somewhat consistent, but still had some exceptions?

Would you all prefer (assuming both options are achievable for a question writer)a:

A) questions that 100% of the time linked 'Who' to a key second word, 'How' to a key forth word, and 'When' to a key third word OR

questions that MOST of the time linked 'Who' to a key second word, but sometimes had a key third word instead; that MOST of the time linked 'How' to a fourth word, but sometimes it would have a key second word

I rarely hit tens when I quizzed, so I am left wondering what 'ten point masters' prefer. Would a 100% predictable system take some perceived skill out of ten pointers or would it still test skill in that you just need to quiz in a more pure "key word then fast buzzer" kind of mode?

Thanks

Validity, Validity...

I figured it'd be nice to have one thread to answer every question you've ever had about validity! I have a few, so I'll get things started. Feel free to add your own!

Okay, are the following intro. remarks valid?

for 20 points. 2-part question. Give 2 complete answers. From the section titled, Jesus Changes Water to Wine.

Here's another one. Based on page 34 of the rulebook, "Requiring Answers Associated with Specific Words, Phrases, or Numbers," Number 2. Does that rule mean that the following question is invalid?

for 30 points. Give a complete answer. From John chapter 21.
Which "I tell you the truth" STATEMENT is found?
